William E. (Bill) Hughes
William E. (Bill) Hughes, a
1956 graduate of Greenwood High, was an outstanding athlete in both football
and track. He was co-captain of the
undefeated 1955 football team and the undefeated 1956 track team. He was First Team All State
in football, and won first place at the State Track meet in both the long jump
and the 110 yard high hurdles. He
finished second in the 100 yard dash and ended up earning the most points in
the State Meet. Bill attended The
Citadel where he was a four year letterman in both football and track. He was voted Second Team
All State
in football in 1959. He was the Southern
Conference Long Jump Champion in 1958 and the S.C. Long Jump Champion in
1959. He was a co-founder and the first
President of the Greenwood Touchdown Club.
