SAMMIE
PICKENS
Sammie Pickens, a 1960
graduate of Greenwood High, excelled in football, basketball, track, and
baseball. He played on both the 1957
and 1959 State Champion Football Teams.
He lettered two years in basketball and was the 1959 team captain. Sammie lettered four years in track and
was named the 1959 Track Most Valuable Player. During the 1960 Furman Relays, he won the
long jump with a record jump of 24 feet ¼ inch. While at Greenwood he set or helped to set records
in the high jump, long jump, mile relay, medley relay, and most points
scored in a meet (32). During the summer
he played baseball for the Post 20 American Legion Team. In 1958, the team traveled to Colorado Springs, Colorado for the Legion World Series and
in 1959 Sammie hit .357 to help lead the team to State runner-ups. Sammie attended Furman University
on a football scholarship. In 1963
he set a Furman record with a pass interception return of 95 yards. While at Furman, he also played baseball,
making the All Southern Conference Team in 1962 with a batting average of
.422.
