Dear Parents:
The School Leadership Teams
for Literacy at Emerald High School and Greenwood High School are working
together to plan our second Literacy Day for August 29, 2008. What a great way to kick off another academic
year on both campuses! This year G.
Frank Russell Career Education Center and
Our Summer Reading Selection
Committee chose nine novels that offer great recreational reading on a wide
variety of subjects. The books are on display in the media center at both
schools. You may also access book reviews on your school’s website. We invite students, parents, and teachers to
view these novels, read a brief summary of each, and then select one book to
read for pleasure during summer break.
In addition, we will offer
“Book Talks” to be aired on the News Network.
This Summer Reading
Initiative offers a positive learning experience for all students in a variety
of ways. First, every adolescent chooses
one book that he or she wants to read from a list of nine selections. Each student will turn in his or her final
book choice on Monday, February 25th, to first block teachers only.
Rising ninth graders will choose books at a later date. Next, our schools will purchase all books
and distribute novels to students by May 28th. During summer break, students read their
books, complete a simple project (suggestions will be provided), and come to
school on August 29th ready to share these projects and discuss their novels in
adult-directed groups of 15-20.
We welcome your questions,
suggestions, and of course, your participation. In addition, we invite
individuals and businesses to help our schools fund this initiative. No donation is too small. For example, a $25.00 donation purchases five
books for our students. Please make
checks payable to Greenwood/Emerald High Summer Reading Initiative. If you
would like to help with this special day, please email or call me at 941-3406.
Thank you,

for pleasure, we read because we can.
