LOWNDES P. SHINGLER
Lowndes P. Shingler, a 1957 graduate of Greenwood High School, excelled in
football. He helped lead the 1955
team to a 12-0 record and the State Championship. He was chosen to play in the 1956 Shrine
Bowl game in Charlotte. Upon graduation, he received an athletic
scholarship to attend Clemson
University. After Clemson’s 1959 ACC Championship
season, he was voted the most valuable player in the Bluebonnet Bowl. In 1960 he was co-captain of the team,
First Team All ACC and All-State Quarterback, Academic All American, and
played in the East-West Shrine game in San Francisco. While at Clemson, Lowndes was a member of
the Blue Key Honorary Fraternity, President of the Tiger Brotherhood,
Executive Officer of the Student ROTC Cadet Corp., Distinguished Military
Student and was voted Clemson
University’s
Outstanding Senior in 1961. He was
drafted by the Dallas Cowboys and the Oakland Raiders, but entered the U.S.
Army and was a player/coach at Fort
Eustis, Virginia.
