John Rally Gilliam
John Gilliam, a 1963 graduate
of Brewer High, was a three sport athlete, excelling in football and
track. He received an athletic
scholarship to S.C.
State University
to play both sports. He was chosen All
Conference in football four times and All Conference in track three times. John was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in
the second round of the 1968 National Football League Draft. He played for eleven years in the NFL, and
played in both the 1972 and 1973 Super Bowls with the Minnesota Vikings. He was an NFL All Pro Selection and a
participant in the Pro Bowl 4 times, 1972-1975.
He ended his career with 490 receptions for 7,650 yards and 49
TD’s. In 1983, he was inducted into the
S.C. State University Hall of Fame and has been inducted into the S.C. Athletic
Hall of Fame.
