Hootie Johnson
Hootie Johnson, a 1949 graduate of Greenwood High School, was an outstanding athlete,
excelling in football. He holds the
school record for the longest rushing play, 94 yards, and ranks second in total
points scored with 262. He rushed for
993 yards during the undefeated 1947 season and in 1948 was chosen for the All
State Team and the Shrine Bowl Team. He
continued his football career at the University
of South Carolina,
lettering three years and winning the Jacobs Blocking Trophy his senior year. After a successful banking career, Mr. Johnson
retired as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Bank of America Corporation.
In 1975, he became the second South
Carolinian to receive the prestigious B’Nai B’Rith Outstanding Citizen Award. In 1999, “The State” newspaper named him one
of South Carolina’s
15 most influential business leaders in the 20th century. Today, he serves as chairman of the August
National Golf Club and the world renowned Master Golf Tournament.
