RESEARCH OPTIONS

The reference collection contains over 2,400 print volumes comprised of encyclopedias, almanacs, atlases, dictionaries.  In addition, the library owns an extensive audiovisual collection and vertical file.  The overall size of the library collection exceeds 18,000.

Students have access to Internet sources with parental permission.  Suggestions for good websites and Internet searching techniques are available from the media specialists.  DISCUS, SCOIS, and Marco Polo are sources available through the Internet.

DISCUS, sponsored by the S. C. State Library, provides information from newspapers, magazines, professional journals, online encyclopedias, dictionaries, reference books, pictures, photographs, maps, charts, and links to the best web sites, government reports, Supreme Court decisions, primary sources, historic documents, recommended reading lists, almanacs, and directories.  Students and their families may use DISCUS at home if they have Internet access.  Simply ask one of the media specialists for the username and password.  More information about this great resource can be obtained at www.scdiscus.org.

Another wonderful resource available in the GHS media center and online is SCOIS.  SCOIS, which stands for South Carolina Occupational Information System, offers information concerning careers, salaries, education and job opportunities, and scholarship information.  The SCOIS program also offers information concerning military careers, apprenticeships, trade and vocational training.  Students can learn more about this program at www.scois.org.  Students can access SCOIS through the local network at school or online at www.scois.net.

Students can access databases available through the MarcoPolo program at the District 50 webpage at www.gwd50.k12.sc.us.
