Dear Chamber of Commerce Member:

The generous support of our business community helped to make our Literacy Day a success last year.  Emerald High School, Greenwood High School, Genesis Education Center, and

G. Frank Russell Career Center are collaborating again this year to sponsor our second Summer Reading Celebration, an exciting initiative that promotes independent reading among our students. This reading project gives every high school student a book of choice to read during the summer break. In order to place a free book into the hands of every high school student in District 50, we need to meet our goal of $20,000.00.

As you are well aware, today’s jobs demand greater literacy skills.  Reading and writing proficiencies are critical keys to success in higher education and in the workplace. The ongoing literacy development of adolescents in Greenwood needs as much attention as that focused on beginning readers if our students are to meet the rising reading requirements of the workplace.  Will you help us to reach this commitment to a literacy initiative for older students?  Your monetary support will enable these schools to offset the cost of purchasing over 2500 novels, paying expenses of guest authors, and offering a larger variety of reading materials in classrooms next year.

Teachers, principals, and media specialists are dedicated to encouraging all of our youth to become lifelong readers.  We invite you to get on board by generously supporting this effort and by visiting any of the campuses and witnessing first hand the excitement of Literacy Day, August 29, 2008.

You may access book choices at www.gwd50.org. Click on Schools/Emerald High School/Reading List or GHS Summer Reading Power Point. To volunteer or to receive additional information, contact Sue Babb.  To contribute, please complete the insert.

Thank you so very much for your community spirit and your continued support of Greenwood’s youth.

Sincerely,

Sue T. Babb, Secondary Literacy Coach

Literacy Day Supporters

In order to distribute books before the end of the school year, we hope to reach our goal and place our order by April 30th.  We will greatly appreciate your donation before that date, but we will also welcome your contribution after that date, since our summer reading initiative is an ongoing project.
