The GHS Competition Dance Team competed in the Eastern Dance
Association’s Dance Classic on Saturday April 3rd and the EDA
Nationals on Sunday April 4th,
2004. The competitions are
divided into divisions such as Jazz, Funk, Lyrical, and Pom. The team won 1st runner up in
their division both days. They competed
against 9 other teams on Saturday and 11 other teams on Sunday.
There were over 150 teams competing in the two events
representing 16 states. Our team was one
of only two from South Carolina,
with South Aiken
High School being the other. The competition was held at the Alabama
Theatre in Myrtle Beach, SC
with thousands of people in attendance both days. The team that placed first in their category
(funk) was Sprayberry High
School from Marietta,
GA.
The girls, along with Coach Scott, Mr. Scott, Joseph Scott, and Nicole
Bucalo (their choreographer) stayed at the Kingston Plantation in Myrtle
Beach. When
they arrived Friday, they attended the off Broadway show “One” at the Alabama
Theatre. On Saturday night they went to
Barefoot Landing and ate dinner at a Japanese restaurant along with all of
their family members who had come to watch the events.
The team brought home two big trophies for their wins. These are being displayed temporarily in Mrs.
Miller’s office in the gym. They also
received over $450 in camp scholarships and gift certificates for the team to
purchase merchandise from EDA. The Dance
Team raised over $5,000 this year through various
fund-raisers for the costs associated with attending this competition. It is through their hard work and the support
of the GHS athletic department and the community that they were able to
experience this opportunity. GHS is very
proud of the dedication and accomplishment of these young ladies.
