BEN F. JOHNSON, JR.

Ben F. Johnson, Jr., a 1949 graduate of Greenwood High, played both basketball and baseball in high school, but excelled in baseball.  While in high school he played on the American Legion Post 20 team for four years, helping them win the State Championship in 1947.  Ben was nominated and selected to play for the U.S. All Star Team by Gov. Strom Thurmond in 1948.  After graduation, Ben turned down several scholarship offers and entered professional baseball as a pitcher in the Boston Braves organization.  He played AAA ball before being inducted into the U.S. Marines.  While in the Marines, he continued to play baseball and helped his team win the East Coast Championship.  In 1954, Ben went to spring training with the Milwaukee Braves and opened the season in the Major Leagues.  In both 1958 and 1959, he pitched in the Majors with the Chicago Cubs.  He finished his professional career as a pitching coach and scout for the Houston Astros.  Ben once stuck out the great Ted Williams and later said, “I like to think I made him retire”.
